**New article on the 20-year-old reason why Shatner may have a grudge against Outlander**

**Updated. Below. Again. Forever. Someone's not letting things go....**

**Updated with new tweets from today below**

Holy beam me up Scotts! What in the wide world of cosmos is happening? Star Trek was involved in two major "disses" of two of my favorite things this weekend: the Kansas Jayhawks and Outlander. First, the K-State marching band depicted what can only be seen as a sex act between a Jayhawk and what was supposed to be the U.S.S. Enterprise but looked more like the U.S.S. Dickwads:

Then, William Shatner and the Outlander fans get into a major brouhaha (yes, I'm calling it that) over E!'s "Girl on Top" competition. Side note: Worst. Contest. Name. Ever. Caitriona Balfe, Claire on Outlander, and Emily Bett Rickards, Felicity on Arrow, are the two finalists in the competition. Ms. Rickards (Bett Rickards?) was (and is) trailing Ms. Balfe. The call was put out to all Arrow fans to get voting. Mr. Shatner, who is apparently an Arrow fan, tweeted the following:
Outlander fans loved the challenge and jumped at the chance to engage:

Turns out, Mr. Shatner wasn't familiar with Outlander.
It looked like maybe that was going to be it for the Outlander snipe (Mr. Shatner got distracted defending the K-State marching band and their oddly shaped Enterprise) but then he decided to wade back into the Outlander game.

It might have stayed a good natured (if it ever was) back and forth but the stakes were raised substantially when Mr. Shatner tweeted this:

Pushy. And Uppity. Claire. The woman and show about whom this and this and this has been written detailing what the show has done for women this year. He might as well have kicked over one of Claire's bottles of ether: the Outlander fan base exploded with indignation. Quite a few Outlander fans tweeted Mr. Shatner, sometimes encouraging him to watch the show, other times criticizing his response. And he responded in kind:

The back and forth continued until even Herself got involved, Outlander author Diana Gabaldon weighed in with her opinion of Mr. Shatner's views.

This bizarre tussle comes on the heels of Outlander's Sam Heughan winning Radio TV's "TV Champion" award, a contest in which 120 MILLION votes were cast in his favor. Throughout the Radio Times competition the actors that were up against Mr. Heughan managed to have fun with it:

No one from Arrow has waded into this mess, including Emily Bett Rickards. Caitriona Balfe has also not commented on Mr. Shatner's posts. She already made her opinion of the contest clear earlier in the week when she encouraged fans to use their same energy to help with the European refugee crisis:
Voting for E!'s "Girl on Top" contest ends on Tuesday, September 8, at 8pm ET.

Day Two

Old Star Trek soldiers never die. Or fade away. Or go quietly into the night. The made for social media war between Outlander fans and William Shatner (Captain Kirk) continues unabated. Claire is still the focal point, but so is Outlander author Diana Gabaldon. From today:

Mercifully, Mr. Shatner is apparently asleep and the "Girl on Top" contest ends at 8pm ET tonight (Tuesday). We'll close with these tweets today from Ms. Gabaldon:

  2. Just wanted to let you know. daughter goes to The University of Kansas (know as KU) and is in the marching band. However mis shaped the the Enterprise was it was done out of love and respect for the show. Also K-state is Kansas State University and the mascot is a wildcat.
