Outlander Shut Out of Scottish BAFTA Awards

**Updated below with clips from the three shows nominated instead of Outlander**

Despite reportedly boosting the Scottish television and film industry by nearly $62 million (not to mention what it's doing for Scottish whisky sales and tourism), Outlander has been overlooked for a Scottish BAFTA award. According to their website, the Scottish BAFTA's "celebrate and reward the highest achievements in Scottish Film, Television and Video Games." Outlander apparently did not fit the criteria despite a positive response from critics and a growing television audience. The Scottish Daily Record reached out to the Director of BAFTA for an explanation:
Jude MacLaverty, Director of BAFTA Scotland, said: “There are only three nominations for Best TV Drama and that’s the three the jurors wanted to put forward. We can't get inside a juror’s head. Outlander was eligible and it was entered but it was up to the jury and it was a fair transparent process.” Bafta Scotland presenter Edith Bowman added: “I haven’t seen Outlander but the judging panel didn’t feel it should be nominated up against everything else in this category. They are filming a seocnd series so maybe second time around.”
Star Sam Heughan, who plays leading character Jamie Fraser, expressed his disappointment in the show not receiving any awards on Twitter:
Nominated instead for a Television Drama BAFTA were Glasgow Girls, Shetland, and Stonemouth. Stars Heughan and Caitriona Balfe did not receive nominations either. Those nominated were Mark Bonnar of Catastrophe, Peter Mullan of Stonemouth, Ken Stott of the Missing, and Michelle Gomez for Doctor Who, Sharon Rooney for My Mad Fat Diary, and Charlotte Spencer for Stonemouth.

Despite good reviews and numerous fan awards such as the People's Choice Award last year for Best Sci-Fi Fantasy show, critical recognition has been slow to come for the fledgling Starz show. The show was famously shut out of Emmy nominations as well only receiving one nod for best score. Just recently, the cast and crew hosted the Hollywood Foreign Press at an event in Scotland to help drum up support for Golden Globe nominations. Those nominations will be announced on December 10.

Outlander finds itself in good company with other shows that never did receive critical recognition from some of the award shows. According to Wet Paint, HBO's "The Wire" only ever received two Emmy nominations, both for writing. Also Battlestar Galactica, helmed by Outlander show runner Ronald D. Moore, never received an Emmy nomination.

It remains to be seen if Outlander will ever get the critical award recognition it so clearly deserves. Luckily for the show, and for fans, it has been picked up for a second season by Starz. In the meantime, fans can continue to support the show by helping it win another People's Choice Award:
