Outlander fans desperate for news about season 2 got some much needed relief this past month thanks to author Diana Gabaldon's presence on set. Gabaldon is there to participate in the filming of the episode she wrote for next season, episode 11. From scouting locations to being present during filming, she was everywhere.

Thankfully, as she always does, she shared her journey on social media. It was a fascinating behind the scenes look at the process of filming a major television series. We've complied some of her Twitter and Facebook posts below. First, here are some tidbits we learned from Gabaldon about season 2 of Outlander:
  • The block Gabaldon was working on was helmed by Anne Kenney who brilliantly wrote "The Wedding" episode from season 1.
  • The Outlander Cumbernauld studios have doubled in size adding two sound stages, bringing the total number to 4.
  • Almost all the costumes for Outlander are made on site.
  • Filming for the new block of Outlander started November 12 with filming at an outdoor location.
  • Jamie's grandfather, Lord Lovat, will appear in the episode written by Gabaldon, played by Clive Russell.
  • Cyclone Abigail arrived in Scotland while they were filming a night shoot for the block bringing with it lots of rain.
  • A typical shooting day on set is usually between 11 and 13 hours, not including the time it takes you to get there and back home.
  • Gabaldon isn't sure if she'll write another episode if there is a season 3 telling a fan on Facebook: "It's one ungodly amount of work.... I'm enjoying it immensely .... but I don't know that I would do it again. Mostly because it's hugely time-consuming and requires being away from home for a long stretch."
  • There are 13 episodes for season 2, and Gabaldon wrote the 11th episode.

Gabaldon will be back on set after Thanksgiving to watch the filming of the rest of the block.

Looooong day on set, but luckily indoors. Got to sit down, wasn't wet, and managed to write 1000 words (my usual daily...
