Outlander TCA Panel Recap

A brand new season of Outlander is just a couple of months away as Starz revealed today at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California. They announced the show will premiere in April. That's just one of the many things we learned about Season Two of Outlander today. Starz also released a new behind the scenes video of season two which you can find below.

Spoilers (obviously) follow. Seriously.

The panel started with some big revelations for the critics: a season two trailer that shows Claire back in 1948 after leaving Jamie. Zap2It reveals the details:

As the trailer opens, Claire is shown waking up near the stones and then wandering down a road, where she asks a man in a car, “What year is it?” and he tells her, “It’s 1948.” Claire is also shown in a hospital bed with Frank by her side. “I am so grateful … all that matters to me is that you’re here now. Whatever happened, wherever you’ve been,” says Frank. Those scenes are juxtaposed with footage of Claire and Jamie in 1740s Paris, attending galas at the king’s palace and conspiring to try to stop Prince Charles Stuart’s uprising. “Change the future, is such a thing even possible?” asks Jamie, telling Claire that “whatever happens,” he’ll make sure she’s safe. It ends in Claire impressing upon Jamie that they have to trust in each other and he says, “In this I do and in this I will.”
Critics were apparently pretty impressed with what they saw with one posting this on Twitter:

Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Diana Gabaldon, and Ronald D. Moore were all on hand to take part in the panel. From the sounds of it, things are going to be pretty stormy for Claire and Jamie during Season Two (as book readers know).

When we last saw Jamie and Claire at the end of season one, Jamie had survived a brutal sexual assault at the hands of Black Jack Randall. He and Claire were on a ship making their way to France. At the very end, Claire revealed she was pregnant. Claire also asked Jamie to help her stop Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites from succeeding in starting a rebellion in Scotland. That rebellion led to the death of many Scots and the Highland way of life. Claire wants to change the future.

And that's where Season Two picks up, with Jamie and Claire in France intent on stopping the rebellion. Heughan says we will see Jamie in season two trying to put his body and soul into the mission to change history. That mission, however, brings out some dark sides of Jamie as he learns to be deceitful. Heughan says Jamie is still struggling with what happened to him at the hands of Black Jack, that there's a darkness inside Jamie didn't know existed. But Heughan reassures everyone that Jamie still has humor and buoyancy.

Balfe addressed Claire's journey back to her own time, and what it means for her to return to her husband, Frank, a man who looks just like Black Jack. Says Balfe, every time that Claire looks at Frank she sees Black Jack. Balfe says Claire's a different woman after season one, and there are more complications to Claire and Frank's relationship. Balfe says she's really looking forward to playing the next phases of Claire's character.

Other tidbits from the panel

Heughan thinks Jamie's absolute dedication to Claire is "admirable." And the one question he would ask Jamie if he could: "Is he a natural ginger?"

Balfe would love to ask Claire about her career drive. Balfe says, "I really admire [Claire's] resilience and her intelligence." And she thinks a dinner with Claire would be a pretty drunk one.

Gabaldon took a playful swing at her friend, Game of Thrones author, George RR Martin who has seen the TV show pass the number of books he has written. Says Gabaldon, "Unlike George, I write no matter where I am or what I'm doing. He says so himself."

Gabaldon is not done with the new Outlander book. She says once she's finished, it will be about 6 weeks before it is published.
